The Supplementary Gaette of the 2nd February 1877 corains a proclamation bringing iro operation throughout the Colony The Forest Trees Planting Encouragement Act of 1871," as amended b;the Act of 1872. Hitherto this leasure has been m force only m Caterbury and Otago. It was optionaVith each of the Provinces whether tl Act should be brought into force i. it or not, and the majority of thenio not seem to have appreciated theidvantages of it. But now that th functions of the Provincial Governents have been vested m the Gojrnor, the new Minister of Lands, tr Donald Reid, has thought it eiedient to bring the Act into operatia throughout the Colony. It enifcs that if any person shall plant n acre of land with forest trees, 1 shall be entitled to a free grant o:two acres of rural land of the wast lands of the Crown, provided thdand has been devoted to purposes i planting for two years, is securely iiced, and the trees m a vigorous al healthy condition. Boot crops may be
planted among the trees without destroying the claim, and no Crown Grant will be issued under the Act for less than 20 or more than 250 acres. If, however, any person shall be entitled under the Act to a less extent than 20 acres, he may pay the balance m cash upon the same terms as the other applicants for rural lands under the Waste Lands Regulations of the Province.
