WELLINGTON RACES.
Second Day, Feb. 10.
Handicap Hurdle Race, 100 soys., 2£ miles, over eight flights of hurdles. Te Whetu Marama 1 St. Albans... ... 2 Victor ... ... 3 This was a very exciting race ; there were several spills, and a very hot trial of speed .took place between St. Albans and Te Whetu Marama, but the Maori had most go m him and won hands down. Victor, jrho was riding third, had a narrow escape from being crushed. After being thrown at the first hurdle he was thrown again at the last, although, being quite out of the race. The jumping was very good. Tommy Dodd
disappointed the people, being early out of the race, having refused a junpp. The "Wellington Cup, 300 spvs., two miles. Guy Fawkes .... 1 Tambourini. . . ... ... < ... 2 Treason ... : ... 3 This was a splendid race ; seven started — Guy Fawkes, Tambourini, Templeton, Morning Star, Glenavy, Treason, and Princess Mary. The lead was taken by Princess Mary, but Grlenavy soon challenged her ; then Guy Fawkes came to the front. An accident happened to Princess Mary's rider. He earned away his stirrup iron, but notwithstanding this mishap the boy rode well and made it very hot for Guy and Templeton. Then ensued a fine trial of speed between the three leading horses, the result being that Guy won by threequarters of a length. Tambourini was second, Treason third, the rest close up. Time, 3 minutes 52 seconds. Hutt Park Stakes, 50 soys, 1 mile. Fallacy 1 Songster ... ... 2 For this race only two entered, Fallacy and Songster. The following were scratched : — Lady of the Lake, Stirabout, Danebury, Morning Star, and Guy Fawkes. It was not much of a race. Fallacy went off with the lead, and won easily, hard held, by about a dozen lengths. The bookmakers were offering two to one on Fallacy against the field. Jockey Club Handicap, 150 soys., 1£ miles. Guy Fawkes ... 1 Flora Macdonald ... 2 Elsa 3 For this event there were 15 entries : the following started : — Guy Fawkes, Flora Maedonald, Elsa, Lady of the Lake, Voltarini, and • Stirabout. The lead was taken by Voltarini, all the rest being m a cluster, Jtedwood's pair running neck and neck m second place, Flora last. Voltarini kept the lead for three-quarters of a mile, when Stirabout showed that he was unable to collar him, and Guy challenged, soon taking first , place, which he maintained to the finish, although not being called upon. Guy Fawkes came m first, Flora Macdonald second, and Elsa third, the rest nowhere . Lady of the Lake threw her rider half-a-mile from home. Hack Race, 10. soys., 1 mile and a distance. This was a splendid race. Myrtle, owned by Wheeler, came m first ; Kai Tui second. The Consolation Handicap, 50 soys., one mile. Princess Mary ... ... ... 1 . Flora Macdonald 2 Bluejacket ... 3 For this race five horses started ; the racing between Flora Macdonald and Princess Mary was very hot, but the former not being well girthed up something went wrong with the saddle, and the rider fell oft, thus putting her out of the race, Princess winning easily, Blue Jacket;, taking third place. This was the last race. . ~" : '" The Governor was present all the afternoon.
