"Wednesday* Nominations for the Wellington Derby of 1878 and 1879, and subscriptions to the Sires' Produce Stakes, close at the Empire Hotel on Monday, the 12fch inst., at 8 p.m. In consequence of the inclement state of the weather, the races have been postponed till Friday. Records at the Museum iS&w "the rainfall m Wellington, from Friday evening last till 8 a.m. to-day (Wednesday), to have been 6" 84 inches. Total fall for Feburary, 1876— 1" 565 inches, and the average for Feburary, during the past 13 days — 3*698 inches^** .. At two o'clock this morv^a fire occurred m Griffiths' fancy biscuit and confectionery manufactory, Farishstreet. Notwithstanding the-high wind the firemen were soon on the spot and saved the building ; only the roof was burned and the stock damaged, the machinery being saved. The property was insured for £1,000 m the Standard. The loss is estimated at a thousand ■pounds.
