The Rev. Mr Bevis is to deliver a lecture on " America" at the Town Hall, Bulls, on Monday evening next. The proceedings are to be varied with music and singing. On Saturday next an extensive sale of general merchandise will take place at the store of W. H. Lash, of Haleombe, Messrs Harris Brothers having received instructions to dispose of the stock under a bill of sale. In another column will be found the programme of the Foxton races, which are to take place on the 21st of next month. The members of the Club deserve great credit for the energy they have shewn m the matter, and we hope the measure of public support accorded to them will continue to increase. A shameful case of wife-desertion has taken place at Feilding. A carpenter named Askwith, lately employed at the Manawatu Bridge at 12s a day, struck for higher wages, and, receiving a refusal, cleared out j for Foxton and went thence to Wellington, leaving his wife and infant child m Feilding quite destitute. The child is said to have died from the mother's not having sufficient food. A telegram from Wangnnui announces that the cricket match with the All England Eleven has fallen through, m consequence of the refusal of the Eleven to come m the steamer Napier. It seems a strange reason for a breach of agreement, yet no other has, so far as we are aware, been alleged. The " Advocate " says that, m consequence of the neglect of the Wanganui cricketers to give proper notice of the match's being broken off, quite a crowd of people from Feilding and Haleombe went as far as Marton on their way to Wanganui to see the game, and got nothing but a wetting for their trouble, besides having been prevented from going to see the Wellington match by the hope of seeing that ■which was to have come off at Wanganui. The Napier had been engaged to bring the English team to Wanganui, but no return passages were provided, as it was understood that the Englishmen were going on to Taranaki. During Bishop Redwood's recent visit to Kumara, Westland, the Catholics subscribed the large sum of £397 towards the erection of a church there. Post cards were issued m this colony on the Ist November last, and up to the 31st December no less than 94,462 cards were sold to the public. The " News Letter" says Mr Lingard intends adding a malting-house to the brewery he is about to erect at Masterton. This should be an inducement to farmers to grow one of the most remunerative of grain crops — barley. The " News Letter " says : — lt is becoming quite a custom m Masterton now-a-days to find some cranky-minded individual riding about on your best saddle-horse when you most want the animal yourself. The "Wairarapa Standard" understands that the proposal to give a complimentary dinner, at Greytown, to Mr Hastwell, has, at his earnest request, been abandoned. The same paper states that m addition to Mr Hast well's paying Dr Diver's account for attending Mr Toxward, Mr J. Macara has undertaken to pay Dr Spratt's account for medical attendance at the time of the accident. The Land Fund receipts for the quarter ending 31st December last are £239,554 5s 3d, of which £206,999 11s 2d was the proceeds of land sales. In Canterbury the land sales for the quarter produced £103,164 16s 7d, m Otago, £87,775 19s 9d. The Under-Secrefary makes enquiries for Joseph William Bowler and Katharine Mahon. The former came to New Zealand m the ship " Waikato," and was last heard of by his friends m England m 3875. Katharine Mahon came here m the " Carnatic" m 1874. The Canterbury land sales are keeping up wonderfully. The receipts for the month of January were £41,521, or at the rate of over half a million a year. A few days ago a shepherd m Otago named Duncan McKenzie attempted to commit suicide by taking strychnine. He was only married the previous day, and it is reported that he committed the rash act so soon afterwards through jealousy, his wife having spoken concerning another man. McKenzie has been committed for trial.
