Feburary 3. A. man named Rodgers, alias Armstrong, was charged m the R.M. Court this: morning with, having, . about the 20th March, 1868, murdered one' "William Mathers, alias; "Red Bill. The accused had been remanded from Wangarei, where he had given himself up , to. as the murderer of Red BOllySubsequently, however, he denied the tmth^of the statement, . Red Bill was found m a deserted shaft on the Karaka goldfield ' about the time above mentioned. The prisoner. appears to-be eccentric, if not insane. He^was recognised by several persons m Court <as having been amongst the pioneers of the Thames ; goldfield. He. was remanded* .
