From some unexplained cause we were unable to obtain our Press Agency telegrams last night, communication being interrupted between this place and Wellington. Whether the interruption was owing to some accident on the line, or to the communication having been cut off at Foxton and not restored, we cannot tell. Several tenders are advertised m our present issue by the Manawatu Highways Board, for metalling, clearing, &c. Mr Thynne holds a sheep and cattle sale at his yards m Foxton on Tuesday next. 1500 sheep and 50 head of cattle are to be disposed of. Tbe English mail via San Francisco will close at Palmerston North on Monday the sth inst., and via Suez on Thursday the Bth inst. The Chief Justice has appointed Mr B. N. Keeling, of Palmerston North, to be a certificated accountant m bankruptcy for the Wellington Judicial District, under the Debtors and Creditors Act, 1876.
Mr Snelson will hold a sale of timber at Nees and Co.'s Sawmills, Terrace End, on Wednesday next, commencing at 2 o'clock. At a recent sale m Wanganui two Muscovy ducks and a drake were guaranteed to be " all m good laying order." It is not generally known that to attempt to evade payment of stamp duty by paying a debt m instalments each less than £2, renders the person doing so liable to a penalty of £10. Such, however, is the fact. The next quarterly sitting of the Licensing Court will be held m Palmerston on Tuesday the 6th March. Applications must be forwarded to the Clerk of the R.M Court at Marton on or before the 13th February. In our last issue we announced that the Rev. Mr Simmonds had been appointed by the Wesleyan Conference to the pastorate of Napier. We now learn by telegram that Mr Simmonds is to remain at Sandon, and Mr Hammond, as before stated, will come to Palmerston. Mr Waite requests us to say that the delay m opening the School here has been owing to the detention of the Melbourne steamer at Dunedin. Instead of the trip from the former place proving, as he expected, one of 10 days duration, it extended to 14 days. The school will re-open on Monday next. Mr Sanson stated at the Council meeting on Wednesday last that there is great dissatisfaction m Sandon, at what is there considered the excessively high valuation put upon the ratable property m the district. There is to be a public meeting m Sandon this (Saturday) evening m reference to the matter, and it seems likely the Assessment Court will find plenty of work before it when it begins its sittings. Advertising has certainly become one of the fine arts, and we have received a very creditable specimen of this higher development of it, m the shape of a Trade List Circular issued by Mr James Smith, of Te Aro House, Wellington. In addition to the goods list, it contains a map of the North Island as divided into counties, and a calendar for tho year 1877. It may be had gratis at Mr Smith's well known establishment m Cuba street. Mr Fletcher, of Wanganui, has announced his intention of giving a very handsome cigar-case to the highest scorer on the Wanganui side m the match with the All England Eleven. The "Wairarapa Standard" understands that a complimentary dinner to Mr W. It. Hastwell is about to be organised m Greytown. Such a movement will be hailed with gratification by one and all, and will prove an undoubted success. At Masterton, we learn, a considerable sum has been already raised as a testimonial to Mr Greening, and the feeling m favour of recognising his services as a driver is very general throughout the district. A St Petersbnrg paper asserts that Russia has at present nearly 1,000,000 men under arms, and 2,670 field pieces, and the army can be increased to 2,500,000 men without calling out the reserves. At the Resident Magistrate's Court, Whareama, on the 23rd instant, a storekeeper named Sheen was convicted on three charges of sly-grog selling. He was fined £40 m all. A native named Epihia recently committed a brutal assault on another Maori named Hamiora, at Gisborne. An information was laid, and when the case came on defendant handed the following original document to the Court : — " I agree to take ten pounds from Epihia Whakatiti, m consideration of damages done to me for assault and battery, and eating my eyebrows off. — Signed, Hamiora (his x mark) Kairoiroi. Witness, Heni Paraone." According to the " Navy," a periodical, as its name imports, devoted to naval subjects, the days of ironclads, as at present constructed, are even now numbered. A series of experiments have been carried out by the Italian Government to test the relative merits of wrought-iron and steel for resisting heavy shot. According to the accounts referred to, the wrought-iron plates were smashed to atoms by a single shot of the 100-ton gun, while the steel plates resisted much better, although they starred and cracked under the crushing blows of the 2,000-lb. projectile. A serious accident occurred at Taratahi Races. Four horses and their riders were thrown m a heap, and one horse killed. One of the riders is seriously injured and not expected to recover. Another rider got his knee broken. The accident was caused by a man named Daniel Haggerty, driving a spring-cart across the course when the horses were running. The 'Englishman' of an October date contains the following by an eye witness : — A dreadful disease becoming well known under the name of "kotkotia," has broken out m several parts^of North Eastern Bengal. It is rumoured to have first appeared m some villages near Ampia, whence its ravages have extended to the extreme eastern part of Calcutta ; but now it has spread all over the country lying on both sides of the Ganges. It is somewhat like the poison of the cobra. It first attacks either the toes or fingers, and then attacks the whole body, when it becomes dangerous and destructive to human life.
The" Patea Mail* describes a. singular accident which happened to a young man named Rogers who was rendered insensible for 48 hours by a flash of lightning. The same thing happened to him two years ago m Taranaki. The Napier " Telegraph " says :— " Signor D. De Vivo, late agent for Mdle. De Murska, has been heard of from New York, and is endeavouring to secure another great musical star for Australia. Signor De Vivo intended going to London and the continent. His ambition is to obtain. Mdle. Lucca or Mdle. Tietjens, who are spoken of as the most likely to accept terms satisfactory to the entrepenneur. Both these ladies have at various times entertained the idea of visiting Australia, but of course it is all a question of terms. The enormous , takings of De Murska have paved the way for others. We cannot expect to hear Patti, Nilsson, or " Albane as yet, but it is a mere public furore which raises them above artistes like Lucca and Tietjens, both of whom are unequalled m ; certain spheres. Mddle. Tietjens made overtures of her own accord, about three years ago, to visit Australia, or, at least expressed ,her willingness to come, with other artistes, but it could not be arranged." This is the way the " Evening Post" describes the political doings at Wanganui :-— " There is a pretty little squabble going on just now amongst the Wanganui papers. The "Herald" declares that the Wanganui people are indignant because Mr Fox doesn't, address his constituents, as he promised to do. The " Chronicle," m effect, retorts that it is like the blessed impudence of the Herald to say so. Then it leaks out that Mr Fox, who hates his senior colleague as "the devil hates holy water," is holding back till Mr Bryce calls a meeting and", makes Aw speech. Mr Bryce's friends retort that he has already spoken at Waverleyy to which the other side : rejoin that he : ought to come to Wanganui and speak there. They are a happy family up". Wanganui way. Fox detests Bryce, and the latter — -who is a really good feuowr-^-doesn't like Fox; Then the hon. member for- Rangitikei, Mr Bal"lance, wouldn't go into mourning if Mr Fox were to depart to a better world, while to the latter Mr Ballance is even like unto Nazareth out of which no good thing could come. The Wanganui people made a mistake m electing Mr : Fox. They should have returned some decent man who would have followed Mr Bryce's lead. In that case Mr Bryce, his colleague, and. Mr Ballance, the member 1 for Rangitikei, would have pulled well tdgether. Mr Fox's election has set everything wrong." Just Published, James Smith's Trade. List Circular, containing— lst, Almanac for the year 1877 ; 2nd, Map of tbe North Island of New Zealand, showing the County-boun-daries m accordance, with the Counties Act, 1876 ; 3rd, An abridged plan of the city of Wellington ; 4th, T?he n 'dfat6meration of departments at Te Aro House,; viz., black silks, colored silks, fancy dresses, shawls, mantles, household furnishings, carpets, flobrTcldtb.es, mourning goods, men's, youths! and boys' clothing, &c. Why will PeopleDo.se Themselves with terrible alkaloids like Quinine, which is a most dangerous drug, and at the best affords only a respite m cases of Chills and Fever, when there is; a harmless, effectual and speedy remedy which totally eradicates any complaint of an intermittent or remittent character. And why do they not anticipate such diseases by protecting themselves against the effects, of malarial poison with such an antidote and preventive asUDOLPHO Wolhe's Schiedam AbomAtic Schnapps. — Advt.
