;■ January 4 . Per Arawata : — " With the exception -of the English cricket match ana the champion race, there hare been few events of interest during the week. The play of the Victorian cricketers was excellent, batting generally good and bowling admirable, the fielding being also very good; The English team was not a particularly strong one, though •it includes the great bowling talent and finest wicket-keepers ; for, with three or four exceptions, it is weak m batting. In the matches they have played they have been twice beaten, with fifteen against them, one of these occasions being a drawn game; and they have won very easy matches when the cricket wa&EiOt; first-class. T^ttiampion race on Monday proved an ea3y victory for Pride of the Hills. His owner said he won £9,000. Briseis came'in sixth, which was last but one. 33i^Premier has announced his intention to again contest Warnambool, and rumours of ' candidates are beginning to be heard preparatorily to the general election. The Cable Conference will meet m Sydney about the 22nd of this month. There are now two prisoners awaiting trial for murder, viz., a man named Windrum for killing a woman at Sand- ' hurst, and Hastings for the murddr of his wife at Mornington.
