January 6. . J^c^Hpany,' consisting of D. Proudfoot and others, has been formed for constructing a line of railway from Elbow to Gore. It is said that this will open up one of the largest and most valuable tracts of land m New Zealand. John Mitchell, a well-known settler at BluesMn, was killed last night when returning home, by the upsetting of his dray. A deputation from Milton waited on the Commissioner of Customs to-day, and complained that their district would be deprived of sufficient Magisterial services m consequence of Mr Maitland's appointment as Commissioner of the Waste Lands Board. Mr McLean said, m reply— "You are aware that the Government is bound to effect retrenchment ; money is scarce, and people must put up with inconvenience, tfhey must, deny themselves the luxuries which they enjoyed when money was plentiful. The Government is curtailing the expenditure, hot only m your district, but elsewhere. "We are committed to retrenchments, and we must effect them, or we could not meet the Assembly.
