A LEVANTER.
On the arrival of the May Queen from London m Dunedin on the: 2nd ultimo, one of the passengers known as. William Jackson, and who was accom? panied by a lady said to ba his wife, was arrested by Detective Dalton of V division of the London police, on a charge of embezzling monies, the property of the Colney Hatch Gas Company. Jackson, whose real name is Wood, at first denied his identity, but on the Detective producing his photo, he admitted he was the person "wanted." Among other things found m his possession was a draft on the Bank of New Zealand, m favour of William Jackson, for £450. On being taken ashore, he was examined at the Police Court, and remanded for a week. The Detectivearrived m Melbourne by the Kent, and came here by the Taranaki last week. The papers necessary for Wood's arresfc were then placed m the hands of the authorities nere, and they only received them back late on Saturday. Wood, who has a wife and a numerous family m London, was secretary of a. gas company, and his defalcations are said to have been large. *
