'■'- The .8.8. Napier leaves Wellington for Foiton this (Saturday) afternoon, and will leaf c Foxton on Monday afternoon. Mr Fowler of Taonui is, we believe, the successful tenderer for the metalling of the Karere road. We understand that Mr Coleman haß already taken steps towards instituting an action for libel against Constable Furcell. After the long interruption from the floods pile-driving at the Palmerston-Fitz-herberton bridge will be resumed on Monday. The English Mail via San Francisco will close at Palmerston North on Monday, the Bth inst., at 3.30 p.m., and via Suez on Thursday, the 11th, at 3.30 p.m. At the Foxton Police Court on Wednesday last a well known character named Hodges, of Otaki, was sentenced to six months' hard labour for two or three acts of petty larceny. Mr Maclean of Bulls has, we believe, been requested by the Government to act m the matter of the Native claims on the Douglas Block, and also m that of the Kiwitea Small Farm Association. Mr Stewart, the District Engineer, calls for tenders for carting sleepers from the Feilding Eailway Station to the finished portions of the permanent way between Turakina and Feilding. In Messrs Bethune and Hunter's Feilding land sale advertisement m our three preceding issues there was an error — not of burs — m the date, which should have been . -Thursday, the 25th January, not Tuesday, the 23rd January. Sudden, though not altogether unexpected, the death of Sir Donald McLean will be felt as a great loss to the Colony. The ex-Minisfcer breathed his last yesterday afternoon, leaving a gap m the ranks of out public men which will not easily be filled. Mr John Hanlon writes to say that his daughter laid " the foundation brick " of the first brick cottage ever erected m Palmerston, on the 28th December last. We hope the new building will realize Mr Hanlon's expectations^ and do battle successfully " against the old foe, Mr Earthquake." In Auckland the wheat-crop promises to be much superior to that of last year, and m several parts of that province they expect to begin reaping immediately after the holidays.
In the Fiji " Times" of fche 7th October there appears a statement showing that the total expenditure of the Government of the Colony; for the half-year ending June 30th, 1876, was J832,266.13s 2d, while the revenue only amounted to £15,488 3s 3d. The " Marlborough . Express" is rather severe on Mr Reader Wood's Christmas gifts to the " poor." This is what our contemporary says on the subject : — At Auckland they show signs of progress m a direction that will seem hovel to Marlborough folk's. A Press Agency's telegram dated Dec. 20th says:— "Mr Reader Wood is giving free Christmas meat to the poor." Thia Mr Wood is the Executive Officer for the G-eneral Government. We dare venture to assert that if such an announcement was to be made here, Mr Seymour would not be able to find any one to accept it. . So much for Auckland, whose very people appear to have become impregnated with pauperism like their public officers. With Tabqtxin's bayishiik} strides, stealthy but swift, disease advances m the feeble organism. Had the constitution been fortified by seasonable invigoration the attack might have been warded off. Now, perhaps medicinal succour may be unavailing. Feeble invalid, be warned m time. Thousands perish who might have been preserved by tonic treatment. Vitalize your enfeebled system and live. Know that there is health, strength, and cheerfulness m every bottle of Udohpho Wolfe's Schiedam Abomatic Schnapps.; — Advt.
