CUP CANDIDATES.

RACING AT FOXTON

PEARL OF ASIA’S FORM

(By “Spectator.”)

Three horses nominated for the New Zealand Cup were in the money at Foxton. Pearl of Asia, winner of the Carnarvon Handicap, is on the minimum weight in the Cup; the race has seldom been won at this weight. Little Robin, who was second to her, has 7.1 in the Cup, compared with the 8.4 which he carried on Saturday. Serenata, another horse on the Cup minimum, was second with 9.6 in the seven furlongs hack race for apprentice riders, being beaten by a neck. Had she been more handily placed near the' finish, she might have won. Other Cup candidates seen in action included Coloney Bogey, Siegmund and Old Surrey (in the Carnarvon Handicap), Taurangi and The Buzzer (in the open sprint), and Royal Vision (in the Trial Slakes). Overdue Placing. Pas do Cheval*, by his second in the Moutoa Hack Handicap, was in the money for the first time since he won the Wanganui Debutant Stakes ,in 1938. His effort was quit* a good one, althoughC. he had little chance with the winner,- ■ Zest. Blinkers Worn. % Sweet Anne, placed in her four previous starts, was due for a win at' any time, and had no difficulty in scoring. in <tho second division -of the Trial Stake’s, at Foxton. She was raced. in blinkers, and led all tho way, running on well at .the finish.

01cl Surrey Back Old Surrey' returned to racing, at-lox-ton after las’ recent spell. -Hit formwas fair and indicated that, the race would do 'him good. He made tlic pace for most ot the way and finished about- the-.middle of the field. ' Return to Flat

It is more than a year, since TIailo: Selassie got into the money.- Some < of -the form lie displayed in his recent hurdling races was fair, but lie seemed to appreciate his return to the flat and - ran \ quite a good race to be third in the distanco hack event at Foxton. lie made the pace with Cetewayo most of the way, but hung out on tho turn. Unfortunate Fall.

Great Fair’s fall at the last fence in the hurdle race was unfortunate, not only in that it spoilt his own chance when lie practically bad the raco won, but also because it caused some interference to 1-lmh Peer and War Lap, who were eventually second and third. The check enabled Good Sun to come up on the outside to secure a good win. Riding Engagements. Additional riding engagements for the Hastings meeting arc:—J. Forsyth : Llnujiola A. E.
