CONTROL OF CITRUS CANKER
Per Press Association. AVELLINGTON, Oct. 1. Provision for the making of regulations requiring the partial or complete destruction of orchards aflectcd by citrus canker, and the pajfinent of compensation to the owners, is contained in the Orchard and Garden Diseases Amendment-Bill which was introduced in the House to-day. The Bill was read a first time. Although the Bill has been introduced particularly to deal with citrus canker it may be applied to any disease affecting orchards and gardens, and detailed powers are provided for the making of regulations to control any outbreak. Compensation for the destruction of special treatment ol any specified plant is to he fixed by regulation. There is also authority for the appointment of advisory committees. Regulations may also he made containing safeguards against the introduction of new diseases in plants. - HOSTEL FOR MAORIS.
Authority for the Native Trustee to assist in financing the erection of a hostel to provide suitable accommodation for Alaoris visiting Hamilton is given by a clause in the Native Purposes Bill which was introduced in the House to-day. The Bill, which was described by the Alinister of Native Affairs (Hon. F. Langstone) as being purely a “washing-up” measure, was read a second time pro forma and referred to the Native Affairs Committee. It is proposed with the aid of a Government subsidy to build the hostel and the Native Trustee intends to provide from moneys in the Auckland and Onehunga Native Hostelries Account Fund a sum not exceeding £250 towards tho cost of furnishing and fitting the building and an annual amount up to £SO for its upkeep and maintenance. The Bill contains several other clauses of miscellaneous nature.
