NAZIS THWARTED
HORDES OF PLANES
NEW ROUTES TRIED
(United Press Association —Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 1.40 p.m.) RUGBY, Oct. 1. Six times on Tuesday the Germans sent hordes oi 50 planes to raid England. Some reached the London area, lint most were turned back or chased. Few bombs were dropped. Experts think the raiders were on an extensive reconnaissance. New routes to London were tried, and the first batch made a circular sweep to the Thames Estuary from the Kent Coast. The midday raiders crossed the Narrows and circled to enter London from the north-west. The afternoon raiders tried the direct route ,to South London, or split into small parties to embarrass the British fighters. Very few were able to reach even the fringe of London.
A heavy barrage greeted the raiding enemy planes approaching the London urea at night. Twelve incendiary bombs were dropped over the south-east area and these caused fires—apparently the signal for other bombers to follow. Although other planes .crossed the coast, the flames had been extinguished before they could get through The “all clear” sitmal which soo.n followed the first ' warning was succeeded by a second warning.
