The number of cases awaiting the attention of the Aliens Tribunal is such that, in order to ensure early completion, provincial tribunals are to be appointed. Farm Labour Shortage.
There is a definite shortage of farm labour in the Wanganui district and is likely to grow more acute with the development of seasonal activities, says an exchange. Shearers are hard to get, and many farmers and farmers’ sons will have to shear their own sheep. Theft From House.
Premises in Ferguson Street, Palmerston North, near the Fitzherbert Avenue corner, were robbed in broad daylight yesterday. The occupant, Airs Stevens, leit home between 1.80 and 2.30 p.m. and omitted to lock the doors. She found on her return that a sum of money had been removed. September Fire Calls.
During September the Palmerston North Fire Brigade received a total of seven fire calls, against a total of 12 for the corresponding month of last year. None of last month’s fires were of a serious nature. They were made up as follow: Chimney, 1; motor-car, 1; other fires, 5. A Hero of the Arandora Star.
Brevet-Alajor C. A. Bet'hell, Royal Armoured Corps, whose death in the Arandora Star was announced at the sinking, gave his lifebelt to one of the internees as the ship was going down, walked oil to the bridge, and went down with the liner alongside the captain “It was the finest’ thing I have ever seen,” one survivor said. Major Bethell was officer commanding the military guard in charge of the Germans and Italians iv'ho were being taken to Canada.
Import Licenses. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, last evening, decided to enter a protest at : the Government’s decision that goods on import licenses for the remainder of this year, if they do not arrive before December 31, are to be deducted from the amount allocated under next year’s licenses. It was pointed out that if, because of war conditions, goods ordered to arrive before the end of the year did not come to hand, , the British exporter would he just as adversely affected as the New Zealand importer. Bulldog Spirit of Britain. The bulldog spirit of British manufacturers and exporters, who continued to produce in spite of the German aerial offensive, was lauded by Mr H. O. Pittendrigh at a meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. He quoted the/reply received by a Wellington firm in answer to a tentative order for goods, provided they were available for export. The British firm cabled back:—“Many thanks for order, much appreciated. The more we get, the more England will be able to win the war. Rest assured we are producing to schedule. Complete shipment will be made within three weeks.”
Mayor’s Generosity. The Mayor of Masterton (Mr Jordan), who drew the winning ticket in a raffle for a- Masterton section, announced yesterday., that he was giving the section for. another patriotic raffle. Thieves Strip a Car.
Thieves removed a car from where it was parked in a Napier street, and without even taking it off the road near the town stripped it of its four wheels, battery, fuel pipe, petrol, and the caps of the radiator and iietrol tank. Training College Students. The Wanganui Education Board has received 58 applications for admission to the Teachers’ Training College next year. For the last two years trainees from this district have gone to Christchurch, and it is expected that they will go there again for their training Dargaville Railway.
In the presence of a large crowd Dargaville’s first main line train was sent off yesterday morning, when about 100 Territorials left for camp at Kensington Park, Whangarei. Mrs A. C. Harding, 0.8. E., unofficially declared the line open and wished the members of the North Auckland Regiment Godspeed and good luck. Another Rotorua Attraction.
Among the varied attractions in the gardens being planned around the Rotorua Town Hall, and one likely to make the gardens memorable for visitors, is an artificial, silica cone constructed at the rear of the building. Built over the vent from which the surplus steam of the central heating system escapes, the cone looks quite natural with its cement sides veined in grey and pink in the manner of the sifica formation. Women in Uniform. “There are three million women in uniform in England to-day,” said Miss Nelle Scanlan in an address to the Wellington Rotary Club yesterday. ‘‘They are in the front line of the war; they sign on like men. If they die they are given a military funeral; if found guilty of an offence they are sent to gaol. The only difference is they get £2 a week while the men get £3 a week. They consider a woman is worth just two-thirds of a man. . . Only last week 1, had a letter from a gentleman in London, who wrote: ‘London is full of women in pants looking for someone to boss.’ ” Scout’s Bravery.
The second highest award which can be won by a Boy Scout for bravery was presented last evening at Christ‘church to David Stanley McLenaghan, aged 13, of the Somerficld Scout Troop. This award of the Scout Silver Cross was presented in recognition of conspicuous gallantry shown by McLenaghan in rescuing another boy, Brian Spurr, from drowning in ■ a tidal creek at Okain’s Bay on January 18. It was mentioned that McLenaghan had' attempted to rescue three boj's who had got into difficulties. and although almost exhausted bv his efforts he rescued one and applied resuscitation before going for further help.
