BASKETBALL

SEASON CLOSES

The Manawatu Basketball Association’s season closed on Saturday, when teams played off to decide the run-ners-up in each grade and a handicap tournament was also held. The games resulted : —A grade : High School Old Girls beat Ramblers. B grade: Takaro A beat High School D. C grade: Tech. E beat Knitex.

Handicap competition. —First round : Bunnythorpe beat High School C; Tech. E beat Knitex; High School E beat Tech. G. Semi-finals: Bunnythorpe beat High School E; Tech. E a bye. Final: Bunnythorpe beat Tech. E. It was interesting to note that when handicaps were added scores were even at the call of time in both 'semi-finals and finals. The referees were Mrs Gorringe, Misses J. Barrie, N. Siddells and C. ATautier.

Subsequently the trophies were presented. Miss C. Vautier, president of the Manawatu Basketball Association, introduced the Mayoress (Mrs A. E. Mansford) and briefly referred to the improved standard of basketball during the season and the liappy conditions in which the competition had been played throughout. ‘ • Mrs Mansford expressed gratification in the increase in the number of teams and hoped there would be a further increase next year. She stressed the point that the important factor was not the winning, but the progress of tho game and it was particularly pleasing that this had been shown. She then presented the cups won during the season as follow :—A grade (Robert Cup) : Bunnythorpe; Graham Cup (runners-up), High School Old Girls. B grade (Nash Cup) : High School C; Barsanti Cup (runners-up), Takaro A. C grade cup: Technical D; runnersup (Tui Cup), Technical E. Aggregate Cup (club winning highest number of championship points) : Technical School.

Following the presentation of trophies, Miss Vautier made presentations of representative badges to the senior representatives as follow Misses J. Barrie, J. Clcvelv, T. Koehler, N. Perry, C. Young, B. Lcete, N. Esau, J. Jacob. E. Skinner, 0. Sinclair, P. Raisin, F. Eglinton, R. Leask. B. Terry, L. Robertson and N. Siddel’s. Mr R. Sinclair, patron of the association, made presentations to members of the Bunnythorpe team (winners of the handicap competition) as follows:—Misses J Glevely (captain), T. Koehler, D. Clevely, 0. Sinclair, A. Sinclair, J. Gee, B. R. Leet and J. Goman.

Miss J. Clevely (captain of the representative team) made a presentation to Miss Vautier on behalf of members as a mark of gratitude for her enthusiasm. Miss A T autier returned thanks and expressed gratification for the way the girls had turned out to practice. She also thanked Mrs Mansford for her attendance.

Mr AV. M. Sexton, vice-president, thanked the referees and officers of the association.

The catering. arrangements for the afternoon were in the hands of Misses F. Ross and J. Barrie.
