RIVER CONTROL.
PALAIERSTON NORTH BOARD
The Palmerston North River Board met to-day, there being present Trustees A. E. Alansford (chairman), J. Batcbelar, W. R. Hopcroft, J. T. J. ITeatley, AV. Alouldey, and W. Anderson.
The Social Security Department advised that authority would be given for the employment of four men for. 13 weeks, at a subsidy gf £4 a man per week, on the construction of j groynes. It was agreed to accept the, proposal. - | The foreman of works (Mr A. Lane) reported: At Petersen’s foreshore the construction of 14 brusli groynes as authorised was completed before the flood rise recorded on September 8. During the flood rise a weakness developed half-way along t'he completed work, making it necessary to carry out additional work. The affected area is approximately three chains long and will be cheeked by additional lower work between the existing brush groynes. Approximately 10 chains of this work was well willowed on the upstream portion before the flood, and good results have occurred in the deposit of silt throughout the recently planted willows. The replacements of pines and macrocarpa trees on tho various foreshores 'has been completed Several areas of willows have been layered and planted. The willows this season are making excellent growth 1 It was decided to proceed with the layering of willows and topping of other trees growing higher than 1511 in certain parts of the board’s area. The reconciliation statement showed a credit balance of £1403 13s 3d, The rates statement show that of the total struck, £3048 16s. there 'had been collected to date £IBO4 3s Id, leaving £1244 12s lid outstanding.
