BOMBER ASSAULT
FIGHTING IN AFRICA.
MORE R.A.E. SUCCESSES.
(United Press Association —Copyright.) (Britisfi Official Wireless.) (Rec. 9 a.m.) RUGBY,. Sept. 29. Many direct kits with, liighexplosive and incendiary bombs were scored when R.A.E. bombers attacked Giarabub Forest, states an R.A.F. communique issued at Cairo on Saturday.
A large cloud of black smoke followed a hit on one building. Returning, the formation were attacked by enemy fighters. One was shot down, and one of our aircraft is missing. An attack was also made on motor transport concentrations 25 miles north of Giarabub. Bombs fell among stationary motor-vehicles, causing many fires and explosions. Enemy bombers escorted by fighters attacked Luga aerodrome, in Malta, slight damage resulting. Hurricane fighters shot down one Gaproni 42 and one Savoia 79. There was no loss to ourselves.
From reconnaissance flights over enemy territory carried out by tlic South African Air Force on Thursday all the aircraft returned safely. Enemy aircraft attempted to bomb Buna (French West Africa) early on Friday and a number of bombs were dropped, but no military damage and no casualties resulted.
An Italian communique states that the British bombed Bardia, Derna, Solium, Giarabub, Assab and Dessye without result.
