PEARL OF ASIA WINS.

FOXTON RACING CLUB. NIGHT ERUPTION’S SPRINT. (By “Spectator.”) At the spring meeting of the Poston Racing Club, on the P'oxton course, on Saturday, the weather was tine and there was a particularly large attendance. The track was in good order. Good fields hud been entered, und speculations was very brisk. Hie totalisutor handled the sum of £21,366 10s, compared with £18,410 when the Hub raced at Awapuni for the corresponding meeting last, year, because of its grandstand being burnt down, and £12,295 10s at the last spring meeting held in Poxton, in 1938. The increase over last year is £2946 10s. The racing was of a,, good order several close finishes were seen. It was unfortunate that numerous delays contributed to holding up the programme and the last race was about three-quarters of an hour late in being run. The favourites met with a fair amount of success, winning four races and paying place dividends in two others. In the main event, the Carnarvon Handicap, however, the decision went to Pearl nf Asia, who, after lying fairly well back till tho last two furlongs, finished gamely . to win by a length. She paid a good price. Night Eruption was supported strongly for the Robinson Handicap, the open sprint, and had the race in hand a furlong from home. She was ridden by W. J. Broughton, who had another winner in Sanction. G. R. Tattersall also rode two winners in Sweet Anne and Kentucky. APPRENTICES’ RACE.

Having his fust race ride, C. Bowry, who is apprenticed to G. \V. New, rode a winner in Last Acre in the Wharangi Hack Handicap, for apprentice riders. Cheerful Lady made the pace for most of the distance, and Titter, Last Acre, Sporting Luck and Serenata were handy l urning into the straight. A good finish resulted, Last Acre gaining the decision by a neck from the favourite Serenata, with Uhoerful Lady a dose third. Next were Titter, Squeers and Sporting Luck. NIGHT ERUPTION’S SPRINT.

A well-backed favourite in Night Eruption won the Robinson Handicap, the, open sprint, fairly comfortably, Screen Star getting close to her, however, as the winner eased up at the finisli. Screen Star and Heroic Maid took the lead in the early stages, and opened up a gap of two or three lengths, with Night Eruption and Rustem ■ heading the others. Night Eruption came through to take charge in the straight, and led to the post. Screen Star held on for second and Trench Law finished fast in third place. Heroic Maid was fourth, ahead of laurangi, the Buzzer and Footloose. GAY FOX SCORES. Gay Fox had a clcar-cut win in the Aiva hou Hack Handicap, in which ho was always well placed. The favourite, Cctcwayo, took over the lead, being attended by Gay hox and Haile Selassie. Sgcptrc and Stella Lux wore handy to these round the back. Gay Fox took charge when the straight, was entered from Haile Selassie and Cctcwayo, with Sceptre and Vaalsstar handy. Oav Fox went on to win comfortably, Vaalsstar coming up to gain second p’ace from Haile Selassie, who ran a .good race on returning to tho flat. Next were Sceptre, Goldgain, Cctcwayo and Red Chief.

FAVOURITE WINS LAST RACE. Tho favourite, Zest, scored a good win in (be concluding event, the Moutca, Hack Handicap, from Pas Do Chcyal, who beat the second fancy, Royai Consort, into third place.' Zest began well. but. Wings of Song, who was bracketed with Royal Consort, took over the lead, and led to the straight, followed by Pas Dn Choval, Zest and Go'dInirn. Pas Do Choval then wont to the front, but Zest, caught him and went on to win from him by a length, with Royal Consort in third place. Then came Goldburn. Wings of Song, Fly By Night and Wakarara.

HONOURS TO. KENTUCKY. Kentucky, scored a win full of merit in the Motuili Hack Handicap, proving too good for the opposition and running the six furlongs in fast time in spite of his •weight -of 9.6.". ‘ . Beau Courcur was the early leader and then Counter went to the front, but Kcnlucky was always close and look the lead in the straight, going on to won comfortably by throe lengths, with Stglow. next ahead of Valiant I.ady. Counter. fripie Crown and Silver Shekel followed. I aiho did not take part in the. race; lie bo’tcd in a false stark and tho field wa& sent away without him. PEARL OF ASIA SUCCEEDS.

Pearl of Asia scored a good win in the Carnarvon Handicap alter an interesting finish, winning by a length from Bittlc Robin. Winsome I.il and Old Surrey w r crc tho early leaderc, but Master Cyklcp went to the front at ihc half-mile. Turning into the straight, Old Surrey and Mauler Cyklon led from Winsome Lu and Gaelic Song. The winner was well back in the early stages, but made a fast run over the last two furlongs-to win on the outside from Little Robin, who came through to beat Wincomc Lu narrowly for second place. Next wore Hunting Cat. Lady Montana, and the favourite Gaelic Song.
