OBITUARY
MR W. J. BROGDEN
The death occurred on September 18 of Mr William Joseph Brogden, a highly respected farmer of the Fitzherbert district. Mr Brogden was horn at Porirua, and came to the Manawatu district when four years old. He lived on the Rangitikei Line with his parents, and eventually left home to take up a farm on Robert’s Line, In 1898 he married the eledest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs I. W. Lovelock, of Newbury, and then went to live, at Feilding. He later returned to the Palmerston North district, and had been on the farm at Fitzherhert for 24 years.
Mr Brogden was of a quiet disposition and made many friends in the district. He suffered from illness in the last four years, but bore this with patience and cheerfulness. He was a member of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association for many years, and in his younger days was a keen exhihitor, gaining numerous awards for horses.
An unusual gift, which Mr Brogden employed ■ very successfully, was that of water-divining. He divined water in many parts of the country, and was well-known for this ability in many centres. He was able to say that lie had never had a failure in this respect. He undertook divining operations for the Palmerston North City Council, by which he detected two flows near the Hospital.
Mr Brogden is survived by his wife and a family of three, Mesdamcs E. A. Perry and H. W. Kilshy and Mr F. L. Brogden, all of Fitzherbert. The eldest daughter, Mrs K. B. Jenkins, of Dunedin, died six months ago. He also leaves a sister, Mrs A. H. McDowall, of Palmerston North. There was a large and representative attendance at the funeral, which was held at the Kelvin Grove Cemetery, and numerous beautiful floral tributes were received. The hearers from the house were Messrs F. E. B. and L. Lovelock, H. Matthews, J. Oliver, E. Perry and H, Kilshy, and at the graveside Messrs 8., W„ and R. Mexted, R. Will, F. H. and B. A. Moodie. Tho service- was conducted by Rev. J. C. Macky.
