Miss Betty Mcßae and Mrs F. K. Clayton, of Palmerston, North, hayo returned home after a visit to Wellington. Mrs J. C. Riddle, of Palmerston North, who, with her father, Mr W. F. Field, of Rongopai Street, lias/been staying at Foxton, has returned home. A meeting of the Manawatu Auxiliary Service Corps was held at tlio Opera House on Tuesday, when tne resignations of members of the general committee were received. Mrs I. Powell was appointed to take charge of the corps and Miss J. Barrie was elected secretary-treasurer. Several senior members were busy at the city library yesterday in answer to a call for help in the sorting of books. The death occurred recently of Miss Alice Sybella Popplewell, of Ada Street, Palmerston North, eldest daughter of the lato Mr and Mrs «• J. Popplewell, of Teinuka, South Canterbury. Miss Popplewell resided for many years in Christchurch and later came to the North Island. She settled in Palmerston North seven years ago, and made a wide circle of friends here. She was an active worker in The interests of the Roman Catholic Church, being associated with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and other organisations. Miss Popplewell is survived by three sisters, Mesdamcs C. Ci'osber.v (Palmerston North); L. Percasky (Christchurch) and C. Kirlter (Lower Hutt), and four brothers, Messrs T. Popplewell (Wainiate), J. Popplewell (Sydney), A. Popplewell (Hastings) and G. Popplewell (Rotherham).

|. Mrs D. Williams, of Wellington, is spending a few days in Palmerston North as the guest of Mrs H. Whitehead, of Grey Street. Miss Ethel Law, national general secretary of the Y.W.C.A., who has been visiting Palmerston North, has returned to Wellington. Mrs I. Robinson, who has been paying an extended visit to her mother, Mrs E. F. Pasley, of Linton Street, is returning shortly to Australia.

Uniformed probably in navy drill with a navy beret, a women’s motor transport corps is to be established in New Plymouth by the Red Cross Society. The death lias occurred in Wellington of Mrs Margaret Jane Butler, wile of Mr J. S. Butler, of Napier, aged 02. Mrs Butler, who was a devoted worker for the Presbyterian Church and an enthusiastic gardener, was, before her marriage, Miss Sloan, being a sister of Lady Troup, of Wellington. Miss Joan Patterson, advertising manager for the C. M. Rosa Co., who has resigned in order to take up nursing, will start her training in January at the Palmerston North Hospital. Until then she is staying with Mrs J. Melville, of Marne Street, for two or three weeks, and will then go to Christchurch to stay with her mother. On the evening of September 16 friends, ex-pupils and pupils of Mrs I. M. Kensington gathered at Mr J. Callesen’s granary to wish her and her husband a happy married life. As the couple arrived they were greeted in traditional country style by .a “tincan brigade” and entered the hall amid a friendly din and showers of confetti. Dancing and items were continued to the small hours. Pianoforte soles by the Misses Callesen, singing by Mias Wilton, and Highland dancing l>- Miss Bernice AVeddel were much appreciated. After supper Mr Frank Brown, on behalf of those present, presented Mr and Mrs Kensington with a large assortment of kitclien and pantry gifts, and expressed the best wishes of all.
