CHILDREN’S BALL
RUSSELL STREET SCHOOL
COLOURFUL SCENE,
Inconsiderately damp tho weather may have been last evening, but there was an air of gaiety at the A. and P. Showgrounds llall when the pupils of the Russell Street School held their annual ball. Spirits ran high, and the galaxy of colour presented by the ex--1 cellent costumes harmonised splendidly. It was the children’s night, and i from the first steps of tho extremely intricate grand march —an unusually J striking serpentine movement terminating in a cross and circle faultlessly perlormed—to the last waltz the programme was conducted for their sole pleasure. Indeed, there was no special dance programme for adults, who, however, joined in the final section with the senior pupils, thus winding up memorable evening, which gained significance by tho fact that it was tho last gathering to be held with the older children before the Inter--1 mediate School is opened. The wet night did not deter a very large number of parents from attending. Those present included Mr E. C. Campbell, a former headmaster of the school. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr | and Mrs A. E. Mansford) were unable j to attend owing to Mr Mansford be- ’ ing in Wellington, and Mr G. Tremaine (Deputy-Mayor) had to forward an apology for Absence owing to an . indisposition. Messrs W. G. Black and W. H. Brown (members of tho Education Board) also forwarded apologies ) for unavoidable absence. I In declaring the ball open, Mr J. A. Grant (chairman of the School Committee) voiced the apologies mentioned ■ and extended a warm welcome to par- - ents, friends, and children. He stated ' that as a matter of policy it had been decided to arrange a programme solely > for ,the children, adding that it was the last time the older pupils would 3 attend. He also expressed thanks to ) the ladies’ committee for their work with tho supper arrangements, the , parents for tneir trouble and expense i with the frocking, the headmaster (Mr J. Connor) and his staff for training the pupils, and all others who assisted. 1 After the National Anthem, the children sang in massed formation “There’ll Always be an England” and » “God Bless New Zealand,” then en- ) terlng upon a delightful programme or dances. Air V. Hobin acted as Ai.G., and the other members of the teaching ! staff who' assisted Air Connbr were Misses C. Cleary, G. Gosnell, M. Feist, M. Lethaby and M. Leamy. Accompanying her husband was Airs Grant, who wore a black velvet frock and evening coat with corsago of scarlet tulips and sweet peas. The members of the ladies’ committee were Ales- ’ dames D. Rabone (chairwoman), W. J. Coman, C. 0. Brill, H. J. Clements.
