“Smash Hitler’f Drive. The Canadian Government has announced a national “Smash Hitler campaign, sponsored by the T ederal War Savings Committee. The object is to enroll 2,000,000 regular war savers pledging themselves to instruct their banks to invest in war savings certificates once a month. British Miners’ Pay. Seven hundred thousand miners have received an increase of 5d a shift under the cost of living adjustment, making an increase since the outbreak of the war of 20d, states a London report. One hundred thousand shipyard workers are claiming an increase of 10s a week.
Kidnapped Boy. It is officially announced from Hillsborough (California) that the threeyearold son of Count Detristan is safe. The kidnapper is Wilhelm Jakos Mublenbroich, a German alien, who entered the United States via Vancouver in 1935.
Tug Sunk at Sydney. One of the best-known and most powerful tugs in Sydney harbour, the Hero, was sunk on Monday when struck by a big freighter which it was assisting to berth. One member of tile crew of five, John Downie, was drowned. The remainder, including Captain S. Weldon, were rescued by water police launches.
Suspected Saboteur. A New York message says the police have questioned Edward Kaiigesier in connection with the'discovery or a homo in the British Pavilion at the World’s Fair on July 4. He is being lie Icl on a charge of possessing ten tear-gas pistols. Tear-gas bombs were found in his room, which also contained Nazi literature and a swastika. Ivangesier is American-born, but admitted tliat lie is a former member of the GermanAmerican Bund. Britain’s War Savings. . The war savings campaign in Britain raised . £7,026,7(51 last week. Since the opening of the campaign nearly £367,000,000 has been raised bv the sale of savings certificates, defence bonds and increases in savings bank deposits. This sum reflects the work done bv the 155,533 savings groups which lave been formed in Britain.— British Official Wireless. Destroyer Clare. The inhabitants of Clare, Suffolk, England, with a population of 1300, have sent the following cablegram to the Mayor of Clare, Michigan United States: “The citizens' of Clare, Suffolk, England, are delighted that an American destroyer is to, bear the .name; common to both towns. ’—British Official Wireless.
British Home Guard. The Secretary for War (Mr Eden) spent the past week visiting units of the Home Guard in the London area. He saw a complete battalion of the Home Guard in military exercises and expressed himself highly gratified by all he had seen.— British Official Wireless. '
Money for Aircraft. New colonial gifts for aircraft include a further £SOO from the war fund committee in Uganda toward the cost of a fighter squadron, each machine of which will bear a place name of Uganda. Uganda’s total is now £427,0. A telegram from the Governor of North Borneo asks the Ministry of Aircraft Production to accept a further £SOOO for a Spitfire. Japan-Brazil Treaty. The Japanese Foreign Office has issued a statement that a JapancseBrazilian cultural treaty was concluded on September 23 at Rio de Janeiro for the purpose of “accelerating interest in each other’s culture.'’ Jt is similar to last year’s Italian-Japanese agreement. American Fleet. The Domei (Japanese) News Agency’s correspondent at Honolulu reports that the United States is strengthening her Atlantic squadrons by gradually withdrawing units from the Pacific. Southern Rhodesian Gold.
The highest monthly production for 23 years was achieved by the Southern Rhodesia goldmining industry during August, and the total production for the first eight months of the current year exceeds half a million ounces. In Washington the Senate Foreign AfFairs Committee unanimously approved a favourable report of the amended treaties with Australia, New Zealand and Canada providing . for direct negotiation between these countries and the United States in any disputes rather than with Britain.
American Trusteeship. The United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee has unanimously approved the Convention of Havana, providing for Pan-American trusteeship over European possessions in this hemisphere if they are threatened.
