AWAPUNI JUVENILES.
NEW SEASON’S STOCK. PROMISING CANDIDATES. (By “Spectator.”) With the start of the new season there is the usual number of two-year-olds in preparation for racing at Awapuni, and those who have appeared so far include many promising sorts. To date there, has been a preponderance of fillies. Some of the new stock have already acquitted thoniselvcs well, and there shoedd bo numerous successes • ahead of local youngsters. One of the most forward of the juveniles is Tolratina, winner of the Debutant Stakes at the Wanganui Club’s meeting. She is by, T'hcio • from Squeeze, and was the first of Theio’s progeny to race and to win in the Dominion. Tetratina made her first appearance on the race track to bo first past the post in the juvenile parado at the Manawatu Hunt Club’s meeting. The winner of the Debutante Stakes, according to past history, is not always able to continue with later successes of note, but Tetratina may provo the exception. It is recognised that a good barrier draw materially helped her to success in the Debutant Stakes. Tetratina, a bay filly, is very fast, but is small. She is the fourth foal of Squeeze, the only other' to race being Prudent Prince, who lias met with sonic success recently. Squeeze 13 a sister to Cuddle and Padishah. Tetratina was bred by Mr G. P. Donelly, and was the last ot the Flaxmero draft to enter the ring at the last national sales. She was bought by Mr B. Brickmany of Wellington, for 140gns, and is raced in partnership with him by Mr F. H.. Bustin. Both are newcomers to racing. Tetratina is trained by J. _J. Waller, In the same stable is Nisus, a.. brown gelding by Man’s Pal—Warden’s Queen. Nisus also appeared in the Wanganui juvenile parado, and finished on well, but with an outside barrier position had no chance of figuring in the finish of the Debutant Stakes. However, at tho Marton mooting he finished sixth in the two-year-old race, and should soon be doing better Ilian that. Bred at Scadown, he is owned by Mrs D. Lamb, of Wellington, and was sold at tho national _ sales for 125gns. Nisus represents a new sire in Man’s Pal. a son of the Two Thousand Guineas and English Derby winner Manna. Nisus is tho first foal of Warden’s Queen, who is a half-sister to Queen of Song, winner of the Wellington Cup and the Dunedin Cup. Another of Theio’s stock is Drake’s Drum, a grey colt from Tame Duck. Ho is in Mrs A. AV. McDonald’s stable, and has yet to race. He is being prepared on the tracks, IMPRESSIVE FILLY.
Ono of the most impressive looking youngsters at Awapuni is Golden Moon, a chestnut filly by Tidcracc —Fintry. She is trained by T. L. Wilson, and was bought at the national sales by Mr R, 11. \V. Holden, of Poukawa; for 260gns. Golden Moon is very difficult to fault, and should win races. Apart from a run in the Wanganui Club’s parade, her only appearance to date has been in tho Debutant Stakes, when she finished fourth. She may require timo to come to her best. Greek Step is a bay filly by The Greek —Weathcrstep, in C. J. Thomson’s stable. She was bought by Mr It. H. AVentworthHoward at tho national sales for 60gns. Not many of the progeny of The Greek, an Australian bred sire, have raced in the Dominion so far. His stock* however, have shown staying ability, and Greek Step is likely to develop on the same lines. After running in third in tho .Wanganui juvenile parade Greek ’ Step finished second to Tetratina in the Debutant Stakes. In L. G. Morris’s care is Bayadeer, a brown filly by Plialeron Bay—Bayloch. Bayadeer was purchased by Mr R. R. Bennett, of Mangatoki, at the'national sales for 550 gns. Bayadeer is promising well. She led tho field in the Wanganui Club’s parade, but was unfortunate in 'drawing No. 14 at the barrier in the Debutant Stakes. She was given a further race aE Marton last Saturday, and finished in fifth place, closo up. G. W. New has four juveniles who have already raced. They are Mymarta. Flying Spray, Premature, and Colombo Bay. Colombo Bay and Flying Spray are very neat fillies. The former, who was bought for 210gns., is owned by Mr A. G. Longhurst, and Mrs M. O’Halloran. A bay filly by Phalcron Bay-Columba, she started her career with a third -in the Debutant Stakes, and in view of that was expected to race well at the Avondale meeting. However, she failed in two races there. Sho is built on very pleasing lines and should go on to better things. Flying Spray, by Plialeron Bay—Sea Scout, by Night Raid, was passed at the yearling sales but is now owned by Messrs J. and L. McMillan. This attractive filly raced in the Debutant Stakes without success.
Premature is a brown filly by Posterity—lmpetuous, and is owned by Mr G. M. Currie, of Wanganui. She raced a,t both the Wanganui and Marton meetings. Mymarta, a bay filly by .Myosotis—Miss Martama, was bought for llOgns. at the national sales, and is owned by Mr - J. B. Bradley, of Foilding. The Debutant Stakes has been her only race to date.
Sandy Bay is traiqed by E. W.. Watson. He is a brown colt owned by Mr A. E. Southey, and made his debut at the Marton meeting.
