FOR GALLANT CIVILIANS.
GEORGE CROSS AND MEDAL
(British Official Wireless.) (Ree. LIB p.m.) RUGBW Sept. 23. The new decoration, the George Croce, is intended to be rewarded for a deed of valour by civilian men and women in all walks of life, like the Victoria Cross, but after which it ranks. Posthumous grants may be made, and tbe Cross will be worn before all orders and other decorations.
It will take the place of the Empire Gallantry Medals, the present holders of which will receive the Cross in substitution.
The George Medal will be granted more freely tor civilian deeds of bravery, although it is intended that the standard will bo high. Lord Chatfield, chairman of the Committee on Gallantry Awards fo> Civil Defence, is charged with ensuring that immediate reports are made by the authorities and organisations concerned.
