PAHIATUA SEAT
NATIONAL CANDIDATE
MR HOLYOAKE TO STAND
Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, Sept. 24. At a meeting of the electoral committee of the National Party for the Pahiatua Electorate, Mr K. J. Holyoake, the former member for Motueka, intimated his acceptance of an invitation to be the official National Party candidate at the next election as the successor to Sir Alfred Ransom, who is not seeking re-election. Mr Holyoake intends at an early date to take up permanent residence in the electorate.
Mr Holyoake represented Motueka in the House of Representatives for two terms, - being deleated at the 1938 general election by Mr C. J. Skinner (Labour) by 703 votes. He first contested the ‘seat in 1931, being beaten by Mr G. C. Black, the Independent candidate. However, in the 1932 byelection he won the seat in a triangular contest, heating Mr P. C. Webb (Labour) by 677 votes. He retained the seat in 1935 in a straight-out contest with Mr R. J. L. York (Labour), whom he beat by 280 votes. Mr Holyoake is a son of Mr and Mrs V. Holyoake, of Riwaka. His grandparents on both sides have been pioneer settlers of the Motueka district. For some years Mr Holyoake ha 6 been interested in mixed farming, hops, tobacco, fruit and dairying. He is keenly interested in sport, having represented Motueka-Golden Bay in Seddon Shield contests for eight years, and has also represented Motueka for many years at lawn tennis.
