DAIRY INDUSTRY

PAHIATUA COMPANY.

At the 25th annual meeting of sharoho.ders of the Pahiatua Co-operative Dairy Coy., Ltd., the chairman of directors (Mr I). O’Brien, senr..) presided. In moving the adoption of the report and balancesheet, Mr O’Brien stated that the farmers of New Zealand would have to pull together and help the British Empire as much as possible hi its great struggle for victory. They had been asked to supply more cheese by the Imperial' Government and seme of the company’s suppliers had been zoned away. They had answered tho call to assist in keeping the British flag flying and were doing their duty. There were a few, however, who had complained of the small extra outlay involved by tho request. JIo deplored the fact that these men had not looked at the other side of the question and seen - what those who would, benefit by the increased cheese output were doing in return. They wore sacrificing all to keep the Empire intact. They wore doing a great job and would continue to do it. At the last annual meeting, added Mr O’Brien, lie lmd appealed to suppliers 1o produce only the best quality materials and he tvas pleased to be able to thank them for responding so heartily, as would be seen by the statistics, to the appeal. In the milk department 100 per cent, finest had been recorded and 97.537 per cent, in the cream department. Those figures spoke volumes. The average test and the payout compared favourably with any other factories in the district. Costs were rising and had been doing so for some time, concluded the speaker, but the directors had foreseen this and had purchased requisites ahead, by which foresight tho company had benefited considerably. In this connection assistance had boon rendered by the secretary (Mr J. G. Brechin). Commenting on the report and financial statement, the factory manager (Mr L. J. Heayns) remarked that ho had heard no complaints from any suppliers. No doubt, at each annual meeting suppliers bad wondered about the increasing costs but during the last toll years the company had doubled its output. If the directors had not had the foresight to increase the facilities at the factory, they would not have been in a position to moot the demands for more production at present being made. The retiring directors, Messrs W. McClcnaghan and D. O’Brien, wero reflected. Mr L. 11. Hughes was re-elected a cream suppliers’ -representative.' The retiring auditor (Mr W. C. Harrington) was also re-elected. It v'as resolved that the present directorate not bo increased numerically. A vote of thanks to the directors m appreciation of their services during the last year, and the distribution of cheques amounting to £IO,OOO closed the meeting.
