There was a good response to the Kumeroa yoting people’s patriotic effort on Thursday, when the.hall was comfortably filled for a social and dance. • A satisfactory financial result .is assured., Mrs Parr and Mr D. Dick (Koninil won the lucky Gay Gordons and novelty contests were won by Miss Mackay (Woodvillc) and Mr A. Corpe (Konini), Mrs Hills and Mr SmJ’the. The winners at euchre were .Mrs Mackay and Mr D. Harris (Woodvillc), and Miss D. Lynch and Mr R. Eades (Woodvillc) were second. Gifts of other competitions were donated by Mr Symc and Mrs E. Brown. Mr O. Miller was M.C. The Danncvirkc Spitfire Fund now stands at £560 5s lOd.
With its customary enterprise; the entertainment committee of the Woodvillc Patriotic Society has arranged for the presentation in the Women’s Institute Hall on Wednesday night of the popular play, “Lovers’ Leap.” The Manawatu Repertory Society, which will stage the play, has built up a high reputation for bright and talented entertainment and there is every prospect that Woodvillc : residents will not, be slow to appreciate the privilege offered and at the same time back up the effort. Admission ' price is very reasonable, and reserves ;may be secured at K. May’s. A perfect rainbow adorned the southeastern sky on Saturday lho arc was complete, and no imperfection of formation could be noted throughout the immense span. The unusual phenomenon was at its best from 5.15 to 5.30 p.m. Lambing percentages are very high on Miss Kelly’s farm at Umutaoroa. Out of five paddocks docked, the average was 138, but in ono paddock it was as high as 158.
NGAWAPURUA.
Mrs Coulter presided at the monthly meeting of the Ngawapurua Women’s Institute. Mrs J-. Waugh, who is indisposed, was wished a speedy recovery. Three new members welcomed were Mesdames If. Erikson. Kelly and Wright. Members were asked to bring their contributions to make up a parcel for the lepers. Mrs Kelly and Miss K. Waugh were appointed delegates to the council meeting. It was deeided to donate £1 of institute patriotic money to the Dominion conference pool of fares. The president thanked all those members and others who had helped in any way with the packing of the soldiers Christmas parcels. Members, unanimously agreed that a parcel should bo sent to Mr Jack Wade, who is now in Egypt, as he had left without recognition from the district. Final arrangements were made in connection with the birthday concert and dance. An interesting demonstration on presentation boxes of fresh flowers was given by Mrs Halpin, who was accorded thanks. Mrs. Orr, of Woodville, gave a musical monologue which was greatly ap predated. Competitions resulted: Worked sack cushion, Miss C. Knapp 1, Mrs Coulter 2, Mrs Olssen 3; bloom, _ Miss C. Knapp X. Mrs C. Morgan 2; jar of flowers, Mrs C. Morgan .1, Miss K. Waugh 2; biscuits Mrs Coulter 1, Mrs Olssen 2, Mrs C. Morgan 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Williams, De la Ilaye and Miss M. Mountfort.
On Saturday night,- the Ngwapurua Patriotic Society's enterprise on behalf of the soldiers’ parcels fund was responded to by an enthusiastic gathering of local residents and visitors which packed the hall. Among the visitors welcomed were several members of the Air Force front Ohakca. Numerous local residents who did not attend forwarded donations, . and,j-jn this way substantially helped. the effort. The good work of the supper committee, Mesdames Knapp, Isakson, Singers, Judd, MePcak, Williams and Coulter, materially contributed to the enjoyment of patrons, as also did the excellent music provided. At the conclusion an auction of cakes proved to bo a very profitable scheme. The committee have every reason for satisfaction with the general success and financial result.
