BETTER HOMES FOR MAORIS

ORGANISATION AT OTAKI

Good progress is being made in the cause of reconditioning the homes of the Maori people in Otaki and settlements throughout the district. Proposals transcending past attempts are in course of consideration by a properly constituted body quite independent of any governmental or other local institution. It' has been decided to invite the general public, both Maori and imkeha, to take an interest in and render assistance in any way to help this movement to successful operation by transforming and adopting more practical methods than hu.ve been the custom hitherto. It is intended that this newly-formed body be recognised as the Otaki Maori Rehabilitation Association, the object being to assist the Government and local bodies in their efforts of reconstruction and improvement. , At. a meeting held on Thursday it was proposed by Rev. Mr Keen that a list'of all the Maori residents in Otaki borough and outskirts be drawn up showing the conditions under which they are living and the most urgent eases needing attention also of those Maoris who require homes that are not overcrowded or congested. On completion of the list it will lie presented to Parliament; it is hoped to complete this information in time to be presented at the same time as the already organised Maori deputation will present its protest against the private Bill which has recently been presented to Parliament by the Porirua College Trustee Board enabling that institution to sell the college property. It was also decided to ask all religious bodies to render all help in their power towards improvement in the conditions now prevailing in many Maori homes in Otaki. This, it was stated, could host be accomplished bv supporting the, new organisation, which recognises the home to lx? the foundation of wellbeing. . happiness and advancement, especially the health of the children.
