SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNEY
OLD BOYS SENIORS WIN
The Manawatu Rugby Union’s senior seven-a-side tournament, field at the Showgrounds on Saturday was won by the Old Boys team. Eight teams competed and in all their three games Old Boys showed clear superiority. The grounds were in good order and some fast and interesting football was seen. The details are:— First round.—Old Boys 16 v. United B 0; St. Patrick’s 3 v. Kia Toa B 0; Kia Toa A 7 v. Eeilding Old Boys 3; United A 8 v. Eeilding 3. Semi-finals.—Old Boys 14 y. St. Patrick’s 5; Kia Toa A 11 v. United A 0. Final.—Old Boys 11 v. Kia Toa A 3. Play was mostly in midfield for the early stages of this matelij but Old Boys asserted their superiority later. Towards the end of the first spell O’Dea broke away and had a clear run tc the lino to score. Clark converted. The Old'Boys backs travelled across the field at the start of the second spell, McNeill sending on to Cutler, who went over in the corner fer a try which was not converted Kia Toa took a turn on attack and carried all before them in a loose rush from which O’Neill scored. The kick failed. Old Boys p*pt the result beyond doubt when Barraud scored a further try after a good run down the wing. This was unconverted. The winning team consisted of Barraud, Cutler, McNeill, Clark, Shand, O’Dea and Henry.
The tournament was controlled by officers of the Manawatu Rugby Union and referees were Messrs York, Shearman and Doherty.
ROWLAND CHALLENGE CUE
SUCCESS OE KIA TOA JUNIORS
The Rowland Challenge Cup, competed for by the winning junior teams in the Manawatu and Horowhenua Rugby Unions, was this year contested by Kia Toa (Manawatu) and Eoxton (Horowhenua), at the Showgrounds. The home team had a decisive win by 17 points to 3. The game was open and interesting, producing some good hack movements. Eoxton were somewhat unlucky in missing a number of free' kicks from handy positions. Kia Toa had the advantage in the early stages and Harvey scored a try which Hearsey converted. Subsequently Wills put over a good penalty kick. Eoxton then applied pressure and maintained it till Hakaraia kicked a penalty. Kia Toa had the game in safe keeping in the second half, in which they took the initiative at the start. Hearsey kicked a penalty goal and Doolan and Parker both secured tries. Foxton were attacking in the concluding stages hut could not score again. Mr E. Jackson was referee.
THIRD GRADE MATCH.
In a third grade match at the Showground? United beat Pclone (Wellington) by 22 points to 3. Mr Donnelly was referee.
RESULTS IN OTHER CENTRES.
Wellington.—Wellington 22 v. Trentham ' Army team 15. Auckland.—Ponponby 24 v. North Shore 13: Training College Bv. Suburbs 0; Takapuna 10 v. Technical 3; Marist 11 v, University 6: Otahuhu 20 v. Grafton 18. Christchurch.—Varsity,' the championship leaders, after being four points down, in i the second spell beat Air Force. 13—9. There is only one Saturday to go before the season ends, and Varsity, by their victory on Saturday, must take the 1940 championship
