PATRIOTIC FUNDS.

NEW APPEAL TO BE MADE

STATEMENT BY AIAYOR

lu an interview with the “Alanawatu Standard,” to-day, the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) gave an outline of tho procedure to he followed prior to making the next appeal for patriotic funds in Palmerston North. Instead of conducting an appeal for the relief of distress in London before the vice-regal appeal, the two arc to be combined. “In connection with the proposed provincial appeal to reimburse the £IOO,OOO remitted to the Lord Mayor of London’s Fund, it was intended to commence this appeal lor the City and Kairanga quota of £2OOO next week, but it now appears from Lord Galway’s statement that this appeal is incorporated in the major appeal for £1.000,000 which is to commence on October 1,” the Mayor said. “This being so, then the City and Kairanga quota will be £2o,ooo'and the period for raising such an amount will be proportionately longer. “I do not want to duplicate appeals to the citizens, and as there is to be a meeting of the Provincial Patriotic Council in Wellington on' AVednesday next, the position of this appeal should he clarified. It is then intended to call a public meeting in the Council Chambers on Thursday next to set up a committee to consider this and other major appeals. . “I realise our people are anxious to subscribe to the London appeal, but as the money has already been sent, a few days’’ .delay in making the local appeal will not affect the position of those-in distress as a result of the indiscriminate bombing in England, but, will I think, save making two appeals in quick succession.”
