PETROL IMPORTS.
MORE MONEY; LESS VOLUME
CHANGE IN SUPPLY
(By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 21. One'.of the most significant features of petrol importations this year is the increased expenditure in the first six months, despite the fact .that the quantity imported, compared with the first six months of 1939, is down to the extent of 14 million gallons. Imports for the first 6ix months of 1940 totalled 41,751,856 gallons valued at £1,118,753. The previous year’s figures for the first six months were: Imported, 55,790,216 gallons; value, £1.027,609.
Important changes have taken place in sources of -supply compared with the pre-war year of 1938, when the value of petrol imported from the United States was £527,777. In the last six months. New Zealand has spent only £478 on United States petrol. It is making greater use of the Netherlands East Indies, while the Bahrein Islands sent more in the last six months than during the whole of 1938.
