VIRUS ISOLATED.
SWEDISH SCIENTIST’S CLAIM
STOCKHOLM Sept. IS
Karl Kling, chief of the State Bacteriological Research Department, reports that he has successfully isolated the virus of infantile paralysis. He has concluded that the infect on spreads chiefly indirectly like typhoid, dysentry and cholera, and rarely directly as the result of personal contact. The live virus was found in butter made with contaminated water.
MEDICAL COMMENT.
DOMINION’S EXPERIENCE.
Per Press Association
DUNEDIN, Sept. 20. Commenting on the Stockholm cablegram- regarding infantile paralysis, Dr C. E. Hercus, of the Medical School at Otago University, said while the facts stated by Dr Kling were important there was clear evidence so far as New Zealand was concerned that personal contact was the chief cause of the spread of the disease. Dr Kling was perhaps inclined to over-emphasise the new fact, and it would he a serious mistake to accept the position as applying to New Zealand.
