FLOWER SHOW

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 19. The annual flower show under the auspices ot the Shannon W.D.F.U. was held in the Druids’ Hall on Wednesday in ideal weather. This fixture grows in popularity each year, and this year the hall space was taxed to display the large numbers of entries in each class. A very high standard was sustained in every class, and t.ho large and appreciative attendance of the public must have been very gratifying to the organisers. Tho Mayor (Air E. Butt) called on Cr W. Clayton to deputise for him in declaring the show open, which Mr Clayton did. He expressed tho townspeople’s gratitude to the W.D.F.U. for tho splendid work they do in the direction of beautifying the town and district: A sweets stall and tea-rooms did good business. The net proceeds from tho show are to bo handed to the Spitfire Fund. Till the bulbs were judged by Air G. Larsen. Awards wore:

The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) presided at tho Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening. Also present were Crs. Hyde, Clayton, Lind, Roach, Downes, Aitchison, and Birss. Tho district traffic inspector reported that in August two porsone were tested and passed lor drivers’ licenses. No traffic offences had to bo dealt with and, in fact, no offences of any typo had come under the inspector’s notice. The general conduct of . tho traffic was commented on ns being' good. Tho officer-in-cliarge, War Library Service, acknowledged throe parcels of books. The district agent, Social Security Department, advised that his department has agreed to increase tho subsidy to £3 18s 9d per man-week as from September 9. Tho Mayor, Cr Clayton and the town clerk reported on tho mooting of

local bodies held at Palmerston North, when the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of National Service, addressed the meeting with icgard to the establishment of the Homo Guard. The council resolved to give the proposal its wholehearted support. The town clerk was instructed to order material required for sealing Stafford Street and part of Plimmer 'lerracc. Cr Hyde reported that 50 ngaio trees had been planted in various streets and work was. propressing satisfactorily in cleaning up the side of various streets roady for mowing. Cr Birss reported that, in company with Or Perry, he had attendod the Fire Brigade’s annual meeting. Despite the loss of one or two members, the brigade was oow up to full strength and keeping up its enthusiasm. It had a substantial credit balance.

Cr and Mrs Perry aro on holiday in Christchurch. Mrs and ‘Miss Aim, of Levin, were in Shannon for tho flower show, Mrs Aim acting as assistant judge and Miss Aim as a steward. Their many friends were pleased to renew acquaintance and tp'isee that they still retain an interest in fohannon.
