PAYMENT ON DELIVERY.

PETROL FOR PUMPS. DAIRY COMPANIES OBJECT. Objection was voiced, at a meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Companies’ Association, to-day, to the system now operating under which spot cash must be paid for petrol delivered to pumps. It was pointed out that this arrangement was most inconvenient for dairy companies whose offices were, in most cases, not near the point of delivery of the petrol. One instance was quoted of a delivery lorry calling . with an 800-gallon load of petrol and taking it away again because a cheque could not be given at the time of delivery. Another case was quoted wherein a messenger had to be sent eight miles to the dairy company’s offices to secure a cheque. A letter had been written to one oil company, said a delegate, and the reply had suggested that the dairy company deposit a sum with the oil company, the latter to notify the former when the deposit was approaching exhaustion. Another suggestion advanced was that a cheque, already signed, be held at the factory, to he filled in when the amount of petrol delivered was known. Objection was raised io this on the ground that it would be unwise to so leave a fully-signed blank cheque. The meeting decided to write to the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Hon. D. G. Sullivan) asking him if it was correct that this procedure had been adopted at the behest of his department (a report having been made that this was so), and pointing out that in the case of dairy companies, whoso credit was termed to be as good as any business firm’s, considerable inconvenience was caused.
