SHORTAGE OF SHEARERS.
PROSPECTS FOR THIS SEASON. EFFECT OF ENLISTMENTS. While there is not expected to be any acute ‘shortage of shearers in the Palmerston Nort'n district, according to a prominent member of a stock firm, tfie position for farmers owning between lUOO and 2000 sheep in the upper Rangitikei areas may be more troublesome on account of the enlistments of young men w'ho normally undertake this work. ’ In the Manawatu, it explained, there was a general practice of cooperation between neighbours for the shearing of their sheep, and the enlistments would not, as yet, seriously affect this arrangement. Further north, however, unless the same system is adopted, farmers owning sheep country might be put to inconvenience, although this season they may have the sheep shorn up to time. For the station country about and beyond Taihape, gangs of Maori shearers had already been engaged, as in previous years. In Canterbury- the position is reported to be more serious and at a meeting of the Timaru Agricultural Association it was decided to communicate with the Minister of National Service, Hon. R. Semple, and other primary industrial organisations.
