PERSONAL.

Mr J. Hartgill, a well-known resident of Akifcio, passod away at Dannevirke yesterday, following an operation. Mrs E. D. Warburton, of Kiwitea, is a sister. Mr G. Syversen, of Longburn, who 'has been on the staff of the Kairanga Dairy Company for the past 19 years, has left to go into the Air Force station at New Plymouth. Mr S. A. Broadbelt, of Levin, was to-day re-elected chairman of the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Association and Mr J.' Boyce, of Glen Oroua, was elected chairman of the cheese committee.

Messrs F. G. Jolly (Palmerston North), C. E. Robinson (Feilding), F. A. S. Clarke (Horon'henua) and A. Nayman (Rangitikei) have been elected to the council of the New Zealand Garage Proprietors’ Association. At the invitation of the Wanganui Education Board, the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) has consented to declare open the Palmerston North Intermediate School in February next. Mr Fraser was Minister of Education when the grant for the school was made.

A former Pitcairn Islander, and grandson, oh his mother’s side, of Fletcher Christian, leader of the mutineers of the Bounty, Mr S. M. Warren, died in Wellington on Tuesday, aged 66. Mr Warren was one of the first Pitcairn Islanders to be presented to the King. An early resident of Wellington, Mr Walter John Westwood, died recently at the age of 81. He came to New Zealand 47 years ago and after a short period of service at the Government Printing Office, Wellington, entered business on his own account. He retired in 1925 and lived in Otaki till a few months ago, when 'he returned to Wellington. The death occurred in the Greytown Hospital on Monday of an ex-Mayor of the town, Mr 11. T. Rees, at the age of 74. Mr Rees was born in Sydney and had been a resident of New Zealand since 1868. He lived at first in Wellington and later in Taueru, where he was in business and acted as postmaster. Some 42 years ago he settled in Greytowii, and since then had taken an active interest in the affairs of the town. He was Mayor • from 1924 to 1935 Mr W. Rees, of Dannevirke, is a son.
