AVONDALE WINS.
BEAU LEON’S DOUBLE. PROMISE FOR DERBY. a (By “Spectator.”) Beau Leon is one of the host Derby prospects seen out so far tins season. On tho . first day at Avondale he met some good hacks in the Champion Plate and won as required. He had a clear-cut win in the Avondale Guineas on the second day, and could have won by a wider margin. It seems to bo without doubt that Beau Leon will prefer distance racing. He lias the build and the gait of a stayer. Back at Work, Lady Tinkle, winner of tlm Winter Cup, has resumed work at Levin. Sho was given an easy time on her return from tho Grand National meeting and will be picparcd for the next Trcntliani fixture. Working in Blinkers. Amigo has lately been worked in blinkers. Ho recently reared, fell and then bolted when out oil the tracks, but came to no harm. Ho is in good order, although ho has hot been asked for much fast work.
Good Impression. Royal Lancer made a good impression in his win at Ashburton. He could not race at tlie Grand National meeting because of an eye injury, and it v/as not till two weeks ago that he was placed under the care of A. S. Ellis at Riccsrton.
Juveniles Not Impressive. Most of tho _ two-year-olds racing at the Avondale meeting tv ore' reported not to be very impressive,, being undersized and backward in physical development. Cumbria, who won tho Nuisory Handicap on Monday, had plenty of size, good depth and was soundly ribbed. Avondale Cup Winner. Clinch, who won tho Avondale Cup on Saturday, is a four-year-old colt by Appellant ironi Marbie ued, by Marble Aren from Miss Wilson by Soult. Clinch won three races lust seuson, all in hack events, lie is owned by Mr U. J. Wells, of Auckland, and is trained at Ellersiio by E. George. Success Repeated.
C. Emerson won a raco each with Don't Forget and Prudent Prince at the Grand National meeting, and repeated his success at the Ashburton , meeting, on Saturday. Settlement, racing in the sume colours as Prudent Prince, finished fust in third place in the Ashburton Handicap after being a long way back most of the journey. Royal Chief Appears.
Royal Chief reappeared at Ashburton in the seven furlongs Spring . Handicap, among his opponents being Willio Win and Toro lvoura, who helped to make this field one of tile most representative seen at Ashburton ior some time. Royal Chief gavo a very fair performance, finishing fourth. On tho tracks at Riccorton this week lie showed tho benefit of the race, and covered seven furlongs very freely in 1.33 in company with Iceland Spar. Colombo Bay Fails. Colombo Bay was third lo Tetratina and Greek Step in the Debutant Stakeu at the Wanganui club’s meeting, but failed completely in two races ut Avondale, where sho was expected to make some showing. This Awapuni-trained filly failed to make any impression oil the Avondale Stakes fieid, although she had a chance at the turn, and her effort on Monday was not any better. Colombo Buy was fortunate, in the Debutant Stakes, to be one of tho best away at the start.
