(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 17. 'The district quota ot 58 Christmas parcels were pitched and forwarded to Wellington on Monday. Tho ’district includes Shannon, Tokomaru, Opiki and Makorua. Tokomaru 1 contributed 10 excellently packed parcels', Opiki donated £ls and Makerua £2 10s towards the cost of parcels;, Mukerua also contributed a further £3 15s towards a fund for future parcels. The sum of £3l 12s towards the parcels fund was raised and any balance is to ho held for future requirements in this direction. Some 601 bof the best quality Christmas cake was generously made and donated by Mr J. A. Roach (Shannon). This was sufficient lor tiro 48 parcels and also for the local R.S.A. to make up their 15 parcels, which are to be scut privately to each local lad overseas. 'Die committee was fortunate in securing enough glucose tins from Mr T. Thwailes lo pack all the cake. These tins are a perfect size for packing lib of cake. The ladies of llie Patriotic Committee spent the afternoon packing Ihe biscuits ami cake, thus making the wrapping of the parcels in the evening much easier. Thanks are due lo the business people who ' supplied the eases and to Mr 11. Warmau lor yeoman service in connection with the preparation and packing. Later in the evening a meeting was held, when representatives of Opiki, Tokomaru and IVlakerua wore present. The treasurer reported that the committee had £162 in hand. It was resolved to discontinue the monthly house-to-house collections for the time being. In response to queries from Tokomaru and Opiki, it was decided that tile chairman and secretary visit these places and address meetings on the aims and objects of the organisation. Airs If. Easton is spending a few weeks with Mrs Little, of Taumarunui.

At a recent meeting of the School Coin.liiittee, advice was received that the Education Board had granted a subsidy towards . a supply of books for tile school library. The usual tree planting was carried out on Arbor Day and an address was given by the chffirman (Mr E. T. Moody). Great interest was centred in four young aspen cuttings which were donated by an ox-pupil, Air E. Newton, now of Tauranga. The headmaster reported that £5 16s 3d had been handed to the treasurer of the local patriotic fund, from school concerts held after school. The committee expressed appreciation to the headmaster, staff and pupils concerned.
