LEAVE FOR TEACHERS.
TERRITORIAL TRAININGThe Wanganui Education Board, at its meeting yesterday, gave consideration to the question of leave for men teachers called up for Territorial training from October 1 to December 31. The chief inspector (Mr B. N. T. Blake) said the greatest difficulty would be experienced in finding teachers to take the place of those called up, and he suggested that leave should not be granted. It was suggested by Mr W. G. Black that the board should protect its teachers by publishing a statement as to its attitude. Reoresentations might be made to the Man-Power Committee. On the other hand, the defence call was paramount and possiblv should be answered even if it did involve a shortage of teachers for a period. Employers were expected, in spite of difficulties, to grant leave. Some members thought the matter one for co-operation. The secretary (Mr G. N. Boulton) pointed out that some teachers were at the end of the lart period of their training, which should not be interrunted.
The chairman (Mr E. F. Hemingway) said it would be better to close the schools than lose the war.
On the motion of Mr Black the hoard favoured the granting of leave, hut left the matter in the hands of the secretary and the chief inspector to deal with each application on its merits.
