CRIPPLED CHILDREN.
ART IN HANDWORK,
A most interesting display has been arranged in one of the windows of Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s premises by the Wanganui branch of the'Crippled Children’s Society, comprising the work of crippled children | from all over New Zealand which was | entered in the society’s recent handiwork competition. Not only the pnze- ! winners are represented, but the stanI dard of much of the work would do credit to a fully able person, and is amazingly high when it is remembered that the workers are severely handicapped in many cases and all are very young. There is a beautifully worked supper cloth in Assisi embroidery, made without a pattern or transfer by a onearmed girl. Other embroidered articles include needlework pictures, d’oyleys, tray-cloths and hand kerchief sachets. There are children’s frocks exquisitely smocked and delightful -tapestry bags and other 6in,all pieces. The knitted articles provide one of the finest sections and include bed jackets, jumpers and caps, hot-water bottle covers (made by children under 12)jind dolls’ dresses (by children under io). Beautifully worked and in many cases elaborate. patterns are a feature of this class, an outstanding piece of work ]>eing a powder-blue bed quilt ill one piece. There are also tea cosies, slippers, woven articles, woodwork, baskets, an attractive line drawing and a variety of delightful toys. The whole display is a revelation of what is being done for the crippled children of the Dominion.
