FAIR RENTS ACT.
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 18. “This is the first prosecution of its kind that lias come before me,” said the Magistrate (Mr F. E. Reid) when | the Labour Department prosecuted Arthur Leslie Choate for a breach of the Fair Rents Act by obtaining possession of a house from his tenant on the representation that he needed it for himself and selling it within six months without a magistrate’s order. The prosecutor said the tenant, Patrick J. Maggin, had vacated the house on receipt of written notice from Choate, who occupied the premises for only seven weeks, then selling the house. Counsel for the defence said Choate decided to sell owing to the. cost *.f needed repairs. Maggin was comfortablv settled in another place. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £1 and said he was not impressed by the way in which Maggin had brought the breach to the notice of the Labour Department.
