BOMBING OF LONDON
help for victims.
CITY AND DISTRICT.
The residents of the city and Kairanga' County are naturally anxious to know what steps are being taken regarding raising money for the London Distress Fund. The Mayor (Mr A E. Mansford), in an interview 'to-day, intimated that a special appeal would be made next week to raise the quota of £2OOO from the city and the lvairanga County; further, that a public meeting would be called to elect a committee to handle this London Distress Appeal and other major subsequent patriotic appeals that come along. Meantime, this week is being devoted to raising the balance of the 1 lghter Plane Appeal, as it is felt to be or special importance. The Government have given an opportunity and privilege of sending overseas £IOO,OOO to buy extra planes. Circumstances, unfortunately, have prevented New Zealand from sending nearly as many fighting men as in the last war; sending money Home is the only other way left in which we can help, it is stated by the organisers of the appeal. Some £I4OO has already been received, leaving £6OO to be raised to reach the £2OOO quota for the city and Kairanga County, and it is hoped that residents will send in their contributions quickly, enabling the fund to close by Saturday.
