CRICKET

KIA TOA CLUB. The ninth annual report of (he Kia '1 oa Cricket Club states that tlie 1930-40 season started with an active membership of 50, but this number was considerably lessened towards the end of the season owing to players enlisting for military service or being transferred from t(ie district. The senior A team, captained by _ J. Murchison, showed considerable improvement. Murchison again headed the batting average for the season The senior B team, with G. Harvey as captain, was unfortunate in losing about half of its players owing to transfers halfway through the season. This team was forced to withdraw from the competitions. The junior A team played remarkably well, and was unfortunate in not gaining championship honours. The junior B team finished fairly well up the ladder and the coaching which its captain (R. Matson) gave augurs well for the coming season. Tho club’s congratulations are extended to M. Dilks, a junior B player, who in ono innings took tho whole ten wickets for 12 runs, which, if not a Manawatu record, is certainly a club one. The following players will have their names engraved on the Football Cup for the best all-round displays during the season: —Senior A, 13. Broughton; senior B, J. Fletcher j junior A, R. Brown; junior B, C. Matson. The war conditions will undoubtedly retard the progress of cricket this season. It is felt' that thanks are duo to those members who have enlisted or are already serving overseas. To the following members, tlio best wishes of the club for a safe return aro extended: Messrs R. Brown, A. McCormac, R. Dilks, C. Wildes, J. McKay, I. Wasley, E. Filch, K. Cockerill and G. Harvey. Tho club’s finances are in a very healthy position, tho last season finishing with a credit balance of £2O and gear amounting to £6O.
