PLANTING OF TREES
MAKERUA DRAINAGE BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Makertia Drainage Bottl'd was held yesterday, Mr H. Seifert presiding. Others present were Messrs J. D. Aitcliison, W. Jackson, G, T. W. Clifford, H. Sanies and H. Alexander. The chairman, reporting on repair work on a stop bank on Mr E. F. Everleigh’s property, stated that on the upper position steps had been taken to prevent stock from damaging the bank, as requested by the board, and similar work is to be proceeded with as soon as possible on tlio lower position. 1
In reply to the board’s request for tho necessary authority to obtain certain quantities of plain galvanieed wire for river protection works, the Ministry of Supply notified that stocks of wire are now almost depleted owing to the heavy demands for defence requirements throughout the Empire. Supplies, however, will be ; coming forward during the next two to three months but it'would be necessary to ration these, which would be arranged through tho normal commercial channels
A deputation consisting of Messrs L. Vile and A. E. Olsen, representing the set tie ns in the Poplar area, waited on the board and discussed the possibility of tho board attending to the dram at tho back of their properties adjoining the Wliitanui property, which is .not carrying away the water as desired. The board decided to appeal to the Primary Production Council to take up the matter in the interests of increased production. Tho rate statement showed that of £12,444 struck for the current year £llO3 had been paid to date. The overseer (Mr P. V. Tucker), in the course of hie report, stated that concrete . weights had been placed on protection work at Page’s Point, and 500 two-year maerocarpa trees had been planted to replace trees taken from plantations for river work. At the old Foxton Road 400 two-year macrocarpas had been planted, also a further 100 at Paki’s point. The fencing at Kemp’s Bend had been carried a further 14 chains up stream, and 300 trees had been ordered foi this point. The planting of willows above the protection at Kemp’s Bend had been carried out. Work under the No. 13 Scheme would cease on September 13. All four jobs undertaken, namely the deepening and widening of old main drain, the deepening of Parr’s-drain, the removal of willows from the main drain, and the removal of gravel from Smith’s drain, had been completed.
