At a. meeting of the Foxlon Bowling Club it was uecided to open the bcason early in October. A donation was received lroui Mr \V'. Nye, senr., and tour new members were erected:

Thomas, H. A. Hannay, A. Anderson and D. tspeirs; handicappcrs, Mrs V. Husband and Mr L). D. McKenzie. Plans were made lor the opening of the season in October, The final meeting for this year of the drama circle of the Women’s Institute was held at tho residence of Mr and Mrs IJ. It. Barron. The winners of competitions were Miss K. Bcrgin and Mrs P. Baird. Vocal solos were contributed by Mrs L. J. Chittenden, Mrs C. ltobotham and Miss D. Byne and pianoforte soles by Mies K. Bergin. Tho musical accompaniments were also played by Miss Bcrgin. Mrs Baird, on behalf of the circle, sincerely thanked Mrs Barron for her great'interest in its welfare.
At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council the Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau) presided. The question of filling the vacancy caused on tho finance committee resulted in the tabling of a notice of motion by Gr D. Brooks that all committees bo done away with. The discussion arose when the Mayor, after welcoming Cr D. R. Barron, said that tho position on the finance committee would have to be filled and lie called for nominations. After a discussion Cr Barron moved that the matter of filling the vacancy be held over until next meeting and at the same time he indicated that he would support the notice of motion, as he had always opposed committees previously. The matter was accordingly held over. The treasurer reported that of tho current rates levied (£5503) the sum of £3925 had been paid and this with discount allowed, left the sum of £1373 unpaid, approximately 25 per cent., so that 75 per cent, of the rates levied for the year ended March 31, 1941, have boon paid by August 31, 1940. Cr Podmorc said he would like to sco tho finance committee bring down recommendations for flic collecting of outstanding rates. It was agreed that the committee submit recommendations in connection with all rates outstanding at March 31, 1940. Mrs M. E. Perreau is at present indisposed. Tho death occurred in the Palmerston North Hospital on Monday, of Miss Margaret lillen Thynnc, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs E. Thynne, of Foxlon. Prior to the commencement of business at Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council, the Mayor made reference to tho death of Mrs A. G. Huntley, who, he said, had been a sterling citizen of Foxton for a number of years. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried. At a meeting of tho Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild competitions were won by Mrs J. Symon and Mrs C. McEwan. Arrangements were made for the annual church effort.
At tho conclusion of the business at the monthly meeting of the Plunket Society the president (Mrs Nichols) made_ eulogistic reference to the excellent services rendered by Airs Barron, who has occupied the position of secretary for the past twelve years. Airs Nichols called on Airs Barron to accept an inscribed fountain pen as a small token of appreciation from those present. Airs Barron was also presented with a dainty floral posy, made by Airs Nichols. Dr A. Platts-Mills waited on the meeting and spoke of the advantages of inoculating ■ young children against diphtheria. She sought tho consent of tho cotn : mittee to use the Plunket rooms and to obtain the co-opcration of tho Plunket nurse (Miss Lockwood) for the purpose of inoculating children from 'six months to under five years of age. The request was agreed to and the secretary was instructed to write to Dr Blatts-Mills offering Ihe assistance of the committee in any way. ~
