HUNDREDS OF TREES.

PLANTINGS AT PARAPARAUMU. PARAPARAUMU, Sept. 11. “This being Centennial year, wo have spent to the lull limit ot our resources in the planting season jusi concluded,” said a member of the committee of the Paraparaumu Beautitying Society in reviewing the 1940 season’s plantings. “Though the society is ‘cleaned out’ financially for the time being,” he added, “wo have 100 members and numerous generous supporters who. will see us in credit again lor next season’s efforts.” The work of the present season involved the planting of more than 500 named varieties of nursery stock as well as a largo number of poplars and willows. The majority of the named trees and shrubs were planted on Kapiti Road, which runs from the main highway to Paraparaumu beach. There is not much to be seen at the moment for this work, but the committee visualises in a' few years an avenue of flowering and bright foliaged shrubs and trees which will be a live memorial of Centennial year. A good many trees have also been planted on the newly-formed Rosetta Road near the seaside, and the final task of the season was the extension of the pohutukawa grove in Manley Street, Paraparaumu beach. About 90 well-grown pohutukawa trees have been added to the nursery in Hinemoa Street, and will be drawn on in the future as needed.
