CANARY AND CAGE BIRD NOTES.
Not every hen canary will make her nest, though there are fortunately very few exceptions. When it is found that the bird will not make her nest, tho only thing is to make one for her. Take a nest pan similar to the one she is using and place layer upon layer of nesting material therein; all the time keep turning the pan; otherwise the material will not remain in position. A moment’s thought and it will be remembered that this is the bird’s way also; only, she uses, her feet. Press the lining down and towards the sides all the time and ere long there will be perhaps, a better nest than the canary would make herself. Trim the claw of any old hen that is expected to sit this year. Many valuable eggs are punctured by the claw of the sitting hen. It is a simple process; but take care not to cut too. low or an artery in the vicinity may be cut. That means disaster. If the operator is uncertain just where this artery is located, let him hold the bird’s leg up against the strong light; a dark streak down the leg will be noticeable. This is the artery, which must not be pierced. It is quite safe to cut back to within one-sixteenth of an inch of the artery. Use a sharp pair of scissors.
