PLANS FOR DON dUEX. TRIP TO AUCKLAND. (By “Spectator.”) Don Quex should do well at the Avondale meeting, as ho will be suited by the long straight. A four-year-old bay gelding by Lord Quex —Seamstress, he has not done a great deal of racing. He was bought by Mr C. W. Boyd for 50gns in 1938 and eqld a few months ago to Mr C. AV. Jackson, of Auckland. He was started 15 times last season, and displayed his best form at tlie Trcntliain meeting where lie was third to Anita Foe and Sheeny on the middle day and fourth on the last day. _ H win at Awapuni on Saturday was obtained after a good second to Belle Cane in the Maiden Race on the first day, and although ho won from Kilometre and. Charles Ldward by only a narrow margin, there was plenty of merit in his performance. Jockeys as Boxers. At least six Palmerston North . jockeys will take part in the second boxing tour nament organised by Hastings trainers and jockeys, to bo held shortly. Among the riders who have agreed to take part are W. J. Broughton, G.' R. Tattersall and M. Bowden.

A Long Spell. Taurangi had her first race since last spring when she was third at Awapuni on Saturday. She was going very strongly at tho end of the 6ix furlongs race, and as she is a New Zealand Cup candidate her future racing will be watched with interest. .

Riding Engagements. Additional riding engagements for the Avondale meeting are :—C. G. Gouksbro: Estro. F. Cleaver: I.apidarian. R. Stockley: Valamito. Brazilian. Inver, Princess Val, Onctca. T. W. Green: Verus. G. Cameron: Golden Sheila. W. J. Broughton : Greenock, Offer For Gold Court. After his win in the Trial Handicap at tho Wanganui Club’s meeting, it is reported that an offer of 400gn& was made for Gold Court. Ho began racing this winter and his breeding suggests that he will succeed over a distance. He will later be turned to jumping. Scandal in Form.

Scandal might easily have secured a double win, at Awapuni but for drawing the No. 19 position at the barrier on the second day. lie was always near the front, but weakened somewhat in' the end, finishing third. It was a good performance, and his success at tho meeting was impressive, os ho had not raced for about six months.

A Good Second. Sir Beau did not handle the soft going at Awapuni on Saturday too well, and this and the slow pace in the early part of the race, enabled Enrich to challenge him strongly. Sir Beau responded well to draw away again after Enrich had been on terms with him, but the performance of the second horse was also impressive, and ho should do well as a three-year-old. Promising Novice. Star Zone’s racing days have begun witli good promise. After a third in the second division of the Maiden Race on the first day of the Wanganui meeting she was fourth to Lucullus Boy, Hariua, and Scandal on the second day. Star Zone is a four-year-old bay mare by Thomond War Zone', and is owned and trained at Awupuni by Mr J. H. Weekes.

Below Form. Royal Star II had three wins on end before starting at Awapuni last week, but broke his sequence with a display far below his true form. On the first day he failed to stay out the mile and a quarter of the Marangai Handicap, and the reason was given that he had eaten his bedding the night before the race. Ho similarly failed to sco out the six furlongs Owen Handicap on the second day, for which he was again a strong favourite, and a short spell might be of «dvantagc to him.
