CHARGE OF THEFT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. The accidental loss of £44, followed by a period of unsuccessful endeavour to make it up, was given by Abel Kerr Edie, aged 46, a salesman, in a statement to the police read in Court todav, as the reason why lie stole £465 19s from the In ternal Marketing Department by whom he was employed. He pleaded guilty to a charge of theft and was committed to the Supreme Court lor sentence. WATERSIDE WORK. WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. A slopwork meeting of Wellington waterside workers w;as attended by oyer 700. A resolution was passed, viewing with grave concern, and entering an emphatic protest against the imposition of the “so-called” co-operative contract system, which deprives a large number of members who assist in the work from participating in the benefits as a party to a contract with no knowledge of its contents. The union felt continuance under the present conditions would ultimately undermine and destroy the humane and beneficial working conditions obtained by the sacrifice of past members.

AUCKLAND CARPENTERS. AUCKLAND, Sept. 11. Six hundred members attended the annual meeting ot the Auckland Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Union last night, ilie president plir J. McCormack) was in the chair and the proceedings were orderly, lveen discussions on contentious matters took place, the principal interest being centred on the .election of officers to the key positions. Several changes were made ior these, voting being by postal ballot and the results were not known until early this morning when the checking was finished alter a continuous session. The vote for the _ president was taken in the hall, Mr McCormack being re-elected by scoring 243 votes to 225 recorded lor Mr T. Kelly, who was president several years ago. The postal ballots resulted m a cnaiigc of secretaryship, Mr C. Moor beating the retiring secretary (Mr J. G. Kenner ley) by 336 votes to 279. There were seven nominations for two executive vacancies—Mr A. Greig being re-elected. Mr W. H. Trembath did not stand again and was replaced by Mr T. P. O’Connor. For tile position of town organiser Mr R. Stanley was elected, beating the temporary organiser (Mr It. Giles) by 427 votes to 201. Mr E. A. Waters was elected country organiser by 570 votes, almost unanimously.

CHARGES OF ARSON. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 11. “I can only take the view you are a sock”! nuisance of a particularly dangerous type,” said Mr Justice Northcroft, in the Supremo Court today, in ’ sentencing Robert Henry .Butcher, a single man aged 40, to three years’ reformative detention on charges of arson. Counsel said Butcher was sub-normal, but medical opinion did not consider him suitable for an asylum.
