SHIPPING LOSSES.
LATEST ALLIED FIGURES (British Official Wireless.)
(Rec. 9.30 a.m.) RUGBY. Sept. 10. Figures of mercantile shipping losses due to enemy action in the week ending midnight on September 1 show that a total of 20 ships, representing 54.575 tons, were sunk. Five were Allied totalling 15,038 tons, four neutral totalling 13,517 tons, and eleven British totalling 56,020 tons. Although the figure is in excess of the weekly average since the outbreak of the Avar, it is again below the weekly average for the period of intensified activity which began on May 27.
It is authoritatively stated that the Mercantile Fleet flying the British flag is larger than that available Avhen the Avar began.
The increased shipping losses for the AA-eek ended September 1 are attributed to ideal wen.ther and good visibility, favouring U-boats.
